Course:

Comics and Graphic Novels

Course Comics and Graphic Novels

Production of a comic panel or the beginning of a graphic novel

Students will learn upon completion of the course:

Methodologies of creating a comic strip or graphic novel. Deciphering the different art styles in comics and graphic novels. The terminology used in comics by illustrators. Building the students creative cognitive functions such as brainstorming, writing and imagery. Production of the students own comic or panel.

Course will be critiqued for different ages and learning abilities.

Two or more semesters may be needed depending on your child’s creative process or if they want to make a graphic novel.

Objectives of the class are as follows:

  • Graphic novels v.s comics defined

  • Evaluation of comic book illustrators art styles

  • Overview of mediums and tools used in cartooning

  • Basic cartooning and drawing techniques

  • Creative writing or audio dictation

  • Story archetypes and genres

  • Thumbnails and storyboards

  • Character design

  • Psychology of color theory

  • Action panels

  • Perspective

  • Cinematography

  • Lettering

  • Printing

  • Digital formatting

Checks that do not clear will be subject to a $50 charge. After two occurrences, we will no longer accept checks and payment must be cash or venmo.

Scheduling is available for two hours each class period.

Sessions are standing appointments. Consistency in attendance is critical in order to achieve educational growth. Excessive cancellations can result in termination of services.

Manga / Tankōbōn

Course: Manga / Tankōbōn

Production of a Manga

Students will learn upon completion of the course:

Methodologies of creating a manga. Deciphering the different art styles in manga. Storytelling, sub types of manga characters and genres. Terminology of manga used by mangaka (Japanese illustrators). Building the students creative cognitive functions such as brainstorming, writing and imagery. 

Course will be critiqued for different ages and learning abilities.

Two or more semesters may be needed depending on your child’s creative process for their final project. A one shot (chapter in manga terms) will be completed at the end of the course.

Objectives of the class are as follows: 

  • Manga and subcategories

    ( American /Japanese terminology)

  • Evaluation of manga artist (mangaka) traditional vs today

  • Overview of mediums and tools used in manga

  • Basic drawing techniques 

  • Creative writing or audio dictation 

  • Story archetypes and genres

  • Thumbnails and storyboard

  • Character design

  • Psychology of color theory 

  • Action panels

  • Perspective

  • Cinematography

  • Lettering and introduction of Japanese reading styles

  • Printing

Methodologies of sketching. Basic concepts of sketching, cartooning and realism. Building the students cognitive functions such as motor function skills, form recognition and creative imagery.  

Course will be critiqued for different ages and learning abilities.

Imaginative Realism and Pop Surrealism

Course: Imaginative Realism and Pop Surrealism Painting 

Students will learn upon completion of the course:

To create and cultivate imaginative realism, surrealistic  backgrounds and characters through the medium of painting. The process of using realism models or photos to create a surrealistic painting. The history of traditional artists of imaginative painting and pop surrealism. A brief overview of the pop surrealist today. Techniques in acrylic painting and watercolors. Building the students creative cognitive functions such as brainstorming and imagery. 

Course will be critiqued for different ages and learning abilities.

Two or more semesters may be needed depending on your child’s creative process.

Objectives of the class are as follows: 

  • Tradition of Imaginative Painting 20th century

  • Artist in the 21st century 

  • Studio / Media used in drawing and painting

  • Drawing basics

  • Perspective

  • Composition 

  • Grid methods, models and photographs

  • Telling an artistic story with imagery

  • Preliminary sketches 

  • Character design

  • Fantasy character studies

  • Mirror studies 

  • Planning Characters and setting miniatures

  • Architecture, vehicles and planning composition

  • Thumbnails/storyboards

  • Color wheel and psychology of color theory

  • Grounds, mediums, and techniques

  • Mixing paint recipes and color experiments 

  • Introduction of Plein Air studies (On location painting and  sketching )

  • Water pens, watercolors and technics 

Final Piece: A merge of a students imagination and realist components. An Imaginative Realism Pop Surrealist piece.

Plein air studies

Course: Plein Air Studies

To create while seeking adventure. Plein air studies is a way for students to use the environment to replicate a piece. Students will interpret a particular scene with knowledge from the instructor such as informed decisions on perspectives, composition, values, color theory, tools and methods of measuring. Students will be instructed with techniques in watercoloring and sketching. This course is to continue the practice of basic techniques learned throughout the students art studies and to create an awareness of the colorful world around the student.

Course will be critiqued for different ages and learning abilities.

Students should be ready to travel. Parent waiver may need to be completed as a reminder this is a field trip course.

Objectives of the class are as follows: 

  • Use of drawing mediums and tools
